First of all, the weather could not have been better - not a cloud in the sky! If one is fond of Bedford - and I am - it gives one enormous pleasure to see thousands of people enjoying themselves! It was estimated that a quarter of a million people were in Bedford over the week-end.
These pictures were taken well before the huge crowd had assembled, and they only show a fraction of what was going on - it was too hot to cover the event properly!
For me, the opportunity to see Bedford from the top of a crane proved irresistible! There were many wistful people who would have liked to try it, but felt unable to brave it out - a pity, because they missed a treat!

This shows Russell Park, where the main music events were taking place.
Looking to the right a little, there were some quite spectacular rides. I should have tried the mini "eye" but forgot!
For those who cannot place this, I was above the Butterfly bridge, and the building in the background centre is de Montfort University's hall of residence on Polhill Avenue.
More familiar, I think! The boating is on the left. You can just see the suspension bridge and, in the distance, St. Paul's church.

On the right is the boating lake, and in the distance the swimming pool.
Further along is the continuation of the river, seen from above the Butterfly bridge.

There was a fine display on the Castle mound area, which attracted a large crowd.

One of the many decorated boats which were in the procession. The disappointment of England being turfed out before the semi-finals was mitigated by the rousing celebrations that have been going on ever since Italy won!

But for many, the opportunity to relax under the shade of the trees was the greatest treat of all.
Passing along the Embankment today one will have seen the last of the stands being removed. It seemed a pity that the festival lasted only too days, and is not a yearly event - but perhaps it would not be appreciated so much were it to be an annual event.
Full marks to the Council and its staff for masterminding the event. I believe the brains behind it all was the events manager,
Andy Pidgen. He deserves a raise!
Have a good week!
