Mainly for Expats!
News from Bedford, England
Brought to you by Robert Leggat.
1st January 2006:
I am reporting with very mixed feelings that the newsletter for December 31 was the last, at least for the time being.
I have worked on a weekly newsletter since May 1997 - which is a long, long time! In 1997 the Internet was in its infancy, I relished the task, was greatly encouraged by the response from so many expats, and in fact was surprised that there appeared to be so many who have happy memories of Bedford.
But it would be untruthful were I not to admit that after such a long period, the work has at times become a bit of a chore, and I was beginning to feel that I was spending far too much time at a computer, at the expense of meeting real live people! And since I now work professionally on Internet-related matters and have an expanded role in other voluntary activities, sometimes the weekly newsletter was beginning to feel like a busman's holiday.
I will not be abandoning the web-site however, and from time to time will try to report on new events that may be of interest to expats. How that is to be done is something I have not yet worked out. I may return to weeklies in due course, but at the moment feel I need a longish break.
Expats can still keep abreast of what is going on in Bedford. Bedfordshire on Sunday can be found here and the Times&Citizen here. The Three Counties Radio site is here.
I would wish to thank those who have written messages of encouragement to me over the years. To some extent I feel I am letting people down, because it was clear that the newsletter had been read regularly by a surprisingly large number of people.
May I also seize the opportunity to wish all of you a very happy and prosperous new year.
